Dear Morrissey,

As you celebrate 60 years of life, please let me just say “Thank you”! Thank you for being the biggest influence in my life apart from that of my family, for introducing me to many wonderful friends, most of whom I’d never have met otherwise, and for always being a beautiful and brave person. I’m so proud of your resilience and your willingness to take bold moves with your art. I’m always excited for your new music; your LP release days are events to be celebrated!

I’m extremely grateful to have gotten to see you many times in concert and every concert I’ve attended has been one of the best nights of my life.

I’ve included a photo I took at one of my favorite ever concerts of yours, the one on May 25, 2014 in Beaumont, Texas. Texas is my home state and I can’t thank you enough for doing a show in a relatively small city like Beaumont. That concert was so special, and it definitely was, as you said, the “toughest show in town.”

I’ll see you on Broadway next month and I cannot wait.

Happy 60th Birthday, dear Morrissey!

When I discovered The Smiths in 1984, I had no idea that you would be a big part of my life for the next 35 years. Through the good times and the dark days, your songs and shows have been a constant joy and comfort.

Two years ago I got a lyric from Now My Heart Is Full tattooed on my arm to celebrate the end of a five-year cancer battle. Through those awful times, I couldn’t go to most of your shows, but your songs soothed me and helped me get through it; songs that saved my life. Since 2017 I have been cancer free so able to go to shows again, and they mean more to me now than ever, as do you.

I also want to thank you for your life-long crusade to help animals. I was 17 in 1985 when I first saw The Smiths. Watching you sing Meat Murder was so moving, I became vegetarian that night. In 2000 I became vegan and began working as a freelance grant writer for various animal welfare organizations, securing funding to help animals worldwide. You being an untiring voice for the voiceless has not only inspired and motivated me in major ways, but has certainly done so for countless others.

Lastly, I want to commend you for always being a truly unique and strong person when it comes to speaking your mind and being yourself, regardless of the backlash. I can think of no other contemporary artist who has been so brave.

I hope this landmark birthday is full of love and happiness for you. You’ve given so much to so many, and deserve all the best in life.
